At least two radiation “hot spots,” or locations with levels of radiation considered above the Department of Health’s safety standards, have been identified in Staten Island’s Gateway National Recreation Area. An old landfill occupies about two thirds of the park, which is where the radiation has been detected. The park will be closed off to the public over the next few weeks for further testing. “The people of Staten Island, the public who use this park, once and for all need to know that this park is safe,” said Representative Vito Fossella. more [NY1]
