A wall collapsed at the storied Village restaurant Chumley’s yesterday. The collapse at 86 Bedford Street caused no injuries and was reportedly caused by construction work that had not been authorized by the Department of Buildings. An FDNY worker said it was now up to the Department of Buildings to determine whether the structure was secure. Chumley’s owner was named one of city’s worst landlords by the Village Voice last year. The restaurant is a former speakeasy that was frequented by F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck in the ’20s. more [Curbed]
