NYU, which four years ago announced its support for preliminary plans to create a South Village Historic District, now says the proposed district is too large. When plans for the district were first announced, preservations were surprised that the university–which has gobbled up large chunks of the Village for its decentralized campus–backed the plan. NYU’s reversal, however, does not come as a surprise to them. “I’m almost speechless,” said Andrew Berman, director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. “It’s like ‘1984.’ N.Y.U.’s doublespeak is appalling. I feel like the clock is about to strike 13.” more [Villager via Curbed]
