A green program started by the federal government last decade is finally making its first foray into Brooklyn. The borough’s first Energy Star homes will come in the form of condo conversions in Cobble Hill and South Park Slope. Energy Star is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program created in the ’90s to help homeowners save money and minimize air pollution by decreasing the generation of greenhouse gases. Energy Star homes are built using construction techniques that maximize energy efficiency, such as the installation of solar panels, therefore reducing homeowners’ costs related to energy consumption. Developers can thus market Energy Star homes as both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. more TRD
