The Parks Department conducted a two-year census that counted every tree on every block in the city with the goal of determining a dollar value of the city’s trees. The department concluded that the city’s trees pad city coffers by about $122 million a year when factors such as their effect on local property values and how they help reduce energy consumption are considered. The Bloomberg administration has made tree planting a priority as part of its 2030 initiative, much of which is concerned with making New York more environmentally friendly. more [NYT]
