City Planning chief Amanda Burden and over 200 residents turned out for a meeting last night to discuss the future rezoning of Gowanus. Although past community meetings about the rezone have been contentious–with residents concerned about pollution, the future of residential development in the area and the maintenance of industrial uses, among other issues–yesterday’s meeting was a “polite” affair. City planners said the rezoning will likely involve creating affordable housing and cleaning up polluted areas along the Gowanus Canal. Gowanus is “one of the great unique opportunities in the city, but one of the great challenges,” said Burden. “The Gowanus Canal is like no other place in the city.” more [Gowanus Lounge]
