A rally was held yesterday at City Hall protesting the possible sale of Brooklyn’s affordable housing complex Starrett City to Clipper Equities. Clipper, led by David Bistricer, is in the process of retooling his original $1.3 billion bid for the property by teaming with housing advocacy groups in an effort to prove he will not make the 5,881-unit complex unaffordable. Clipper’s bid has been blocked by state and federal authorities, and tenants and elected officials continue to be wary of Bistricer’s intentions. “As Starrett City goes, so goes the city of New York on the question of affordable housing,” said Councilman Charles Barron at the rally. “Not only do we need to preserve affordable housing, we need to build more of it. Otherwise, New York City will turn into a town for the rich.” more [NYT] and
