Builder beware: The city’s Department of Buildings is slowly turning the battleship around. As of April 2, instead of largely reacting to complaints, the department instituted a Low Rise Site Safety Initiative that deploys a two-person Buildings Enforcement Safety Team to proactively monitor new low-rise buildings and try to make unannounced weekly visits. The program applies to structures from seven to 14 stories, and the inspectors are instructed to pay particular attention to public safety, housekeeping, fire protection, sidewalk protection, and excavation and erection operations.
