Shaun Donovan, commissioner of the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, discussed the Bloomberg administration’s New Housing Marketplace initiative in an interview with Metro. Although the plan aims to create 165,000 new housing units over 10 years, Donovan said HPD’s efforts to preserve the city’s stock of affordable housing are not often highlighted. “When you look at the numbers, between 2002 and 2005, when the housing vacancy survey was done, the number of rent- regulated units actually went up [from 1,042,397 to 1,043,677]. That doesn’t mean we’re not losing rent-regulated units, and it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do as much as we can to keep every one of those units,” said Donovan. more [Metro]
