SEIU Local 32BJ, a union that represents more than 50,000 building service workers in the city, held a rally at City Hall today calling for the Real Estate Board of New York to push for higher wages and more training for private security officers in commercial buildings. REBNY president Steven Spinola said in a statement that the rally was “an attempt to perpetuate false and misleading information regarding the standards of New York City’s real estate industry…in a recent survey of REBNY members, we found that, on average, REBNY’s major owner and management members pay significantly more than what the union–Local 32BJ–believes is a fair wage based on its recent contract agreement.” Mayor Bloomberg also released a statement in response to the rally, saying that “building owners and large corporate tenants” should increase their support for, and training of, security officers.
