Skinny buildings feasting on NYC?

So-called “sliver” buildings–tall, narrow structures–seem to be proliferating in the city as the current building boom has resulted in developers building on narrow lots and taking advantage of unused air rights. The Board of Estimate banned the construction of sliver buildings in the early ’80s in certain residential districts after some community members complained that they were out of context in their neighborhoods. New slivers, such as a the under-construction condo at 785 Eighth Avenue and hotel at 305 West 39th Street, are being noticed, in particular, on the West Side in the 30s. “We have a red hot development market where people are putting up these crazy-looking buildings,” says Anna Levin, chairwoman of Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen Land Use Committee for Community Board 4. more [AMNY]
