A large chunk of Brooklyn’s waterfront was included on a list the National Trust for Historic Preservation compiled of the 11 most endangered historical places in the country. The area in question runs from the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park to the site of the now-destroyed Greenpoint Terminal Market complex. The nonprofit contends that new residential developments are erasing the area’s industrial and working-class heritage. The society says that in 2005, 1,740 new building permits were issued in Brooklyn. The same year, the DOB issued 1,924 permits for demolition, which is roughly double the number issued five years ago. Instead of tearing down old buildings and warehouses, the group says they should be integrated into new development schemes. more [NYT]
