Governor Spitzer is expected to call for a cap on local property taxes in his State of the State address on Wednesday. The state’s property taxes are 56 percent higher than the national average, per-capita. Spitzer vowed to tackle property taxes while campaigning for governor, but rejected the idea of a cap. Several states, including Massachusetts and California, cap the annual growth of property taxes. Spitzer is also expected to call for renaming Hudson River Park, the biggest open space development in Manhattan since Central Park, after his Republican predecessor, George E. Pataki Park.
