Despite the Atlantic Yards’ delays, the re-opening of the Brooklyn House of Detention as a planned “jail with retail” and the downward turn of the economy, high-end development on Atlantic Avenue continues to forge ahead. New chain stores and several condos and mixed-use developments have driven up property prices. The avenue that was once known for gas stations and downscale co-ops is now home to an Urban Outfitters and several new residential developments. The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership’s lobbying efforts has been credited with attracting upscale development.
