New Noho historic district approved

The Landmarks Preservation Committee has unanimously approved the creation of a new historic district called the Noho Extension.

The two block district is bordered by Lafayette Street to the west, Bowery to the east, East 4th Street to the north and Bond Street to the south. The collection of 56 buildings, dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, will bring the area’s total of landmarked buildings to 223.

The new district runs adjacent to the Noho and Noho East historic districts, created in 2000 and 2003 respectively.

Ian Schrager’s luxe 40 Bond Street sits on the south border of the new district, with its famous, and now LPC-protected, Herzog & de Meuron-designed facade.

The two blocks also have several examples of 19th century commercial loft spaces that have been gradually converted to residential use since the 1950s, including buildings at 20 Bond Street and 47 Great Jones Street, both designed by the architectural firm Cleverdon & Putzel. TRD
