A state tax commission led by Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi could recommend a capping property tax increases to 3 or 4 percent when it reaches a final decision next Thursday. Their decision might not matter though: Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, has suggested that he has already ruled out a cap. The New York State United Teachers opposes the tax cap, claiming it will reduce spending and teacher salaries. The commission is also expected to recommend a homeowners tax relief program, providing grants to homeowners whose taxes take up a certain percentage of their income.
