More than 4,200 buildings in New York City are under construction, making it difficult for the Department of Buildings to thoroughly inspect each project. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced that 63 more inspectors will be hired, bringing the number up to 461. The department’s excavation team ordered half of 1,685 sites with active excavation to stop work, and 300 underwent a full engineering audit where only two sites passed inspection. “It is not our intent to shut everyone down,” said Timothy Lynch, chief engineer of the excavations team. “But we have to keep the site safe.”
