A Mortimer Zuckerman-led group bought the General Motors Building for $2.9 billion from developer Harry Macklowe, who also sold three other Midtown towers in a deal worth $3.95 billion. Zuckerman bought the G.M. Building for the highest price ever paid for a U.S. office tower. The Macklowes were trying retain ownership of the G.M. Building, which they bought for a then-record $1.4 billion in 2003, while paying down their $7 billion in overdue short-term debt.
