Retail invades Meatpacking District

Upscale retail is growing fast in the Meatpacking District, and even pushing out some restaurants and lounges. While restaurants were once all over the neighborhood, increasing rents are prohibiting new eateries from moving in, said Annie Washburn, executive director of the Meatpacking District Initiative. Hugo Boss, Moschino and Ports 1961 stores are in the works and the Leo Kesting Gallery has moved in, expanding from Williamsburg. New restaurants are also managing to open, including two Italian eateries: Scarpetta at 355 West 14th Street and Zampa Winebar + Kitchen at 306 West 13th Street.
