Federal prosecutors have urged a judge to put former Newark mayor Sharpe James in prison for nearly 20 years for real estate fraud. While the convicted James, 72, has asked for leniency, prosecutors say he should get 15 to 19 years for leading a scheme to steer the sale of cheap city-owned properties to his former mistress. Prosecutors say a harsh sentence will help break New Jersey’s “culture of corruption.”
