BJ’s opening two stores in Brooklyn

Brooklyn supermarkets and unions are not welcoming the BJ’s wholesale stores proposed for Bensonhurst and Canarsie. While supermarket owners fear the big box stores will undercut them, unions claim BJ’s is weak on labor rights and doesn’t accept food stamps. One BJ’s exists in Brooklyn, at Starrett City, while a Costco Superstore is in Sunset Park. A lease has been signed at a Thor Equities-owned former bus depot at 1824 Shore Parkway, near Ceasar’s Bay shopping center in Bensonhurst. No lease has been signed yet at the Brooklyn Terminal Market on Foster Avenue and Avenue D in Canarsie, the site of an old Key Food storage facility.
