Brooklyn Diocese officials said last month that 14 schools would be closed or merge with other schools, but six Catholic elementary schools have now been granted a reprieve. Among the schools that will remain open are St. Anthony of Padua in South Ozone Park and Our Lady of Angels in Bay Ridge. Flatbush Catholic Academy, St. Vincent Ferrer School, Most Precious Blood School, St. Benedict Joseph Labre School, St. Catherine of Sienna School, St. Aloysius
School, St. Ann School and Blessed Sacrament School are still slated to close, though Mayor Bloomberg has said that four of the eight schools may be saved by conversion to charter schools. In Brooklyn and Queens, 32 Catholic schools have been closed in the past four years as enrollment has dropped.
