Floridita Restaurant, at 129th Street and Broadway, is worried that
Columbia University’s expansion into 35 acres in West Harlem, which
was approved in December 2007, will force the restaurant to shut down.
Owner Ramon Diaz said Columbia has promised to relocate him within the
footprint of the expansion, but the university has not given him a
definite location. Diaz has six years left on his lease but received a
notice that Columbia could terminate the lease at any time using
eminent domain. Columbia spokeswoman Victoria Benitez said the
university will talk to Floridita about relocating.
