Crain’s profiles Jonathan Rose, a member of the Rose real estate dynasty and a developer who believes he can make a profit by building affordable and sustainable housing in urban areas. One of Rose’s buildings is David and Joyce Dinkins Gardens on West 153rd Street, which has 86 affordable units, 26 of them reserved for young people aging out of the foster care system. Rose’s business has done well amid the downturn — the value of his projects rose 25 percent, to $1.5 billion, over the past year. He is now working on 19 projects in New York City and raising money to buy up more residential buildings.
