City won’t pay Queens flood victims

The city won’t be compensating the
hundreds of Queens homeowners whose homes were severely damaged by
torrential rainstorms and flooding in 2007. Comptroller Bill Thompson
informed the property owners via letter, saying he had no choice but to
reject their claims because a Department of Environmental Protection
investigation found the city was not liable for their losses. The heavy
rains overwhelmed the sewer lines in the Middle Village and Forest Hills neighborhoods, and workers did everything they could
to battle the floods, the DEP said. Some Queens residents are
considering filing a class-action suit against the city.
