The New York area is facing an oversupply of sports arenas, making the threat of empty seats even more common. Four major sports complexes already exist in the area, and a fifth one, Bruce Ratner’s proposed Nets arena at Atlantic Yards, is in the planning stages. Once that project is completed, there will be nearly 100,000 sports arena seats that need to be filled year-round. The owner of the Devils hockey team, which formerly played at the Izod Center in the Meadowlands and now plays at the Prudential Center, wants New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine to tear down the Izod Center to eliminate one location that could take attendees away from Devils games.
