Non-union labor contentious issue at Carroll Gardens development

A seven-story residential development in Carroll Gardens is drawing continuous ire from labor rights advocates, who say that a subcontractor on the job is taking unfair advantage of non-union labor, according to the Brooklyn Paper. The subcontractor for the building on the corner of Smith Street and Second Place, Howard Schneidler, owner of R&B Drywall, said that union reps from groups such as the District Council of Carpenters have negatively exaggerated the hourly wages he provides. “We’re a non-union shop, and they think that because everyone doesn’t pay union wages, everyone is underpaid,” Schneidler said. “The owner can’t pay the union’s exorbitant prices.”
