King Kullen, a nearly 80-year-old supermarket chain, is shuttering a 35,700-square-foot Staten Island location amid a company wide contraction, according to Crain’s. The Long Island-based company, which is credited with inventing supermarkets, has been focusing its attention away from New York City, industry experts say, to focus on its core markets in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This store closing will be the third on Staten Island in less than two years. The chain currently has 46 stores in operation on Long Island and Staten Island, according to its website. [Crain’s]
