With a record number of tourists streaming into New York City, the renovated Algonquin has a new host to welcome them, according to Gothamist. Matilda, the famed feline at 59 West 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues, has been replaced with a new model. Known only as “Matilda III” for now, the Algonquin’s new mascot was selected from the North Shore Animal League, now that Matilda II has returned to her primary care owners in Brooklyn. It seems the lucky new Matilda isn’t the only hotel news in the neighborhood: experts are watching to see if Extell Development could get to work on a new, 487-room hotel on West 45th Street near Sixth Avenue this year.
