The City Council’s approval of the controversial Chelsea Market expansion will soon send two office towers soaring above the former warehouse building. But before construction gets underway, the existing landmarked building will undergo an interior renovation that will add eight new retail spaces without altering the structure’s exterior, according to the New York Times.

According to Michael Phillips, COO at Jamestown Properties, the market’s owner, the majority of the 5,700 square feet of new space came available when Amy’s Bread moved most of its baking operations off-site. And leases are already being negotiated with eight new retail outlets, although none have been signed as of yet, Phillips said, adding that he expected the new stores would be up and running by mid-February.

“We’re very focused on ethnic food and spices, and the whole beer growler, homemade beers and wine and spirits business, as well as local, New York-produced products,” he said.

But Chelsea Market, which occupies the full block at 95 Ninth Avenue, is also looking to tech tenants. Most recently Google expanded its footprint in the building to approximately 75,000 square feet.  [NYT]Christopher Cameron
