Turning Sherman Creek into an outdoor classroom

Eight design firms face off in developer-sponsored contest

Sherman Creek

Designing an outdoor classroom is a little summer fun for eight of the city’s design firms, which are also competing to revamp an old boat club site at Inwood’s Sherman Creek, DNAinfo reported.

The developer, the New York Restoration Project, plans to use the space to teach everything from oyster gardening to bird watching to wetlands exploration. The winning firm will be announced in November, the report said.

The site, which hosted club rowers and kayakers in the early 1900s, has been in poor shape for decades. Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the banks of the creek, uprooting many trees along the shoreline. The firms are encouraged to submit designs that allow for a sturdy structure.

The New York Restoration Project has no funds for the project or a construction timeline. Through the competition, potential donors will be informed of each of the designs, the publication said. [DNAinfo]Mark Maurer
