WEEKENDEDITION Eran Chen, the architect behind the firm Office for Design and Architecture, has built his reputation as a no-nonsense designer of innovative New York City buildings, and his latest wave of projects promises to increase his clout.

Although Office for Design and Architecture is only five years old, it is currently working on two-dozen projects all with striking designs. For instance, Chen is working with Silverstone Property Group and Adam America Real Estate to bring a ziggurat-style glass mixed-use structure to 275 Fourth Avenue in Park Slope – a building the New York Daily News called “the most exciting apartment building in the borough in a generation.”

“We wanted our buildings to stand out in a crowded marketplace,” Dvir Cohen Hoshen, a principal at Adam America, told the Daily News. “So we turned to Eran.”

His other buildings, which share a pixelated yet futuristic character, include a 32-story tower at 1800 Park Avenue, near 125th Street in Harlem; a large tower in Hunters Point South; Long Island City’s Breadbox Café; a zig-zagged glass residential building on Norfolk Street on the Lower Estate Side; and a controversial redesign of 15 Union Square West.

“A building can be avant-garde and still respect the bottom line,” Chen said. “What it can’t do is push the envelope for its own sake.” [NYDN]Christopher Cameron
