Jeff Koons piece coming to Rockefeller Center
The sculpture weighs 150 tons and rises 37 feet
After 14 years, Jeff Koons is once again bringing a massive new sculpture to Tishman Speyer’s Rockefeller Center.
Over a decade ago, Koons installed a 42-foot flowered “Puppy” at Rockefeller Center, and now he is unveiling “Split-Rocker,” a 150-ton, 37-foot flower-sculpture that’s half pony, half dinosaur, according to Untapped Cities.
Currently, flowers are being grafted onto the base to prepare for its June 27th unveiling. The piece has previous appeared at the cloister of the Palais des Papes in Avignon in 2000, in the gardens of Versailles in 2008, and lastly at Foundation Beyeler.
Koons is known to frequently work with the city’s real estate titans. Recently, he added a massive, 14-foot tall rabbit dubbed, “Balloon Rabbit” to the lobby of Edward Minskoff’s 51 Astor building. [Untapped Cities] – Christopher Cameron
