The onetime home and studios of two prominent midcentury artists could avoid demolition if a preservation organization gets its way. East Hampton town shelled out $1.1 million for James Brooks and Charlotte Park’s property in Springs back in 2013, but the East Hampton Town Board in 2019 ultimately voted to let the Department of Land Acquisition and Management demolish the structures due to their dilapidated states. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, however, wants the town to rehabilitate the property given its “historic significance and cultural importance to understanding East Hampton’s heritage,” the trust’s chief preservation officer Katherine Malone-France wrote in a letter to the board.
