Twitter is going where Meta has gone before.

The social media platform, whose workers have the option of working from home forever, said it will expand its San Francisco headquarters by almost 80,000 square feet, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Twitter is moving into 1355 Market Street that was previously home to Thumbtack, an online marketplace that laid off 250 employees at the start..

“Flexing our offices is consistent with our real estate and workplace strategy,” Twitter told the Chronicle. “At times we may extend our decision to sublease floors, while other times we may take them back to use as our own. This strategy is about providing us with maximum flexibility for our future real estate needs.”

Twitter’s decision comes less than a month after Facebook parent Meta leased all the office space in what will be the tallest tower in the Texas capital, according to the Austin Business Journal. Meta rented 589,000 square feet across 33 floors in a building at 400 West Sixth Street.

Twitter said that it’s committed to making San Francisco its biggest hub.

“We’ll always have a home in San Francisco and continue to support our employees based here,” the company said.

Twitter is also simultaneously trying to sublease additional space at an adjacent building at 1 10th Street. After subtenant lease expirations, the company will be left with 174,000 square feet of leasable space, up from the 104,850 available in 2020.

The company also leased 66,000 square feet in downtown Oakland. The new workspace, which will be among the first that Twitter will design with a hybrid work model in mind, is set to open later this year.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told his employees in May 2020 that many of them will be allowed to work remotely as long as they please. Some 95 percent of workers say they’ll either work from home full time or work from the office a few days a week.
