Shopping center real estate firm EDENS expands west, buys eight properties

The company’s purchases include three properties in the Bay Area

EDENS, a real estate company focused on shopping centers, is expanding to the West with the purchase of eight properties, including three in the Bay Area.

The company, which was founded in South Carolina in 1966, said the properties total more than 1 million square feet, with six in California and the other two in Washington. Donahue Schriber, another real estate firm specializing in shopping centers, currently lists all the sites as its properties. Neither company immediately responded to questions about the transaction.

“Our West Coast expansion is a pivotal milestone for EDENS and the next step toward building a pipeline of future opportunities,” said Jami Passer, the company’s chief investment officer, in a statement. “We have arrived on the West Coast in a meaningful way.”

The largest of the three Bay Area properties is the Alamo Plaza Shopping Center, at 200 Alamo Plaza, with a total of 200,282 square feet and 44 retail spaces, anchored by Safeway and Rite-Aid. The Village Oaks property is located in San Jose at 5760 Cottle Rd. and has 32 retail spaces, with Safeway and Target as tenants. The Gilman District shopping center in Berkeley at 1025 Gilman St. consists of a Whole Foods Market and has a total of 10 retail spaces.

The other three shopping centers in California are Rocklin Commons near Sacramento, Bonita Centre in San Diego County, and Callens Corner in Orange County. One of the Washington properties is located in Tacoma, while the other is in the Seattle suburb of Auburn.

EDENS has properties across the country, including in Miami, Denver and Washington D.C., Houston and Dallas. The company’s portfolio totals 14.2 million square feet.
