Mark Zuckerberg sells SF home for $31M

Off-market deal is top price in city so far this year

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has sold his San Francisco home for $31 million, according to a grant deed filed with the city on July 1 that was signed by the vice president of operations for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

The off-market sale is the biggest residential deal in San Francisco so far this year, narrowly beating out the close of a pair of penthouses that formerly belonged to George Shultz for a combined $29 million earlier this week. That sale is the biggest condo deal in San Francisco history.

Zuckerberg reportedly purchased the Dolores Heights home at 3450 21st Street for $10 million in November 2012 through SFRP LLC, an entity linked to one of his Palo Alto homes. Na’eem Salaam was listed as the authorized signatory for SFRP LLC on the 2022 deed transfer; Salaam’s LinkedIn profile lists him as the vice president of operations for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which was founded in 2015 by Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, “to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges — from eradicating disease and improving education, to addressing the needs of our local communities.”

The buyer for the Zuckerberg property is 3450 21st Street LLC, according to the deed, which is the address of the 1928 home. The buyer’s LLC is based in Delaware and paperwork for the home’s transfer was sent to Michael Gordon, a Delaware attorney who specializes in trusts and estate planning, according to his firm’s website.

The property is listed on Redfin as a four-bedroom, four-bath with nearly 7,400 square feet, but 2014-2015 permits filed with the city’s Department of Building Inspection show completed work to add space on the first, second and third floors, and legalize space on the top floor of the four-floor home, as well as adding a bathroom and creating a roof deck. The kitchen and six bathrooms were remodeled as part of the renovations during that time, and air conditioning and a fire sprinkler system was added. The property also just wrapped up some foundation work last month, according to building department records.

Zuckerberg riled his Mission Dolores neighbors while the house was under construction, with six complaints filed with the city over issues concerning dust, noise and parking. Even after the construction finished, neighbors complained in 2016 that his security detail was taking up “desirable parking spots,” according to SFGate.

Perhaps Zuckerberg was tired of the complaints and ready to spend more time living the island life. Late last year, the Meta CEO added to his real-world Hawaii holdings, and now owns 1,400 acres on the isle of Kauai. He also bought two side-by-side lakefront homes on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe in 2019.
