Late Wednesday night, an explosion tore through a multi-million dollar home in Plano.

The explosion occurred on the 3700 block of Shantara Lane at about 8:54 p.m. No one was home at the time of the explosion, and no injuries were reported, according to NBC Channel 5 News.

Neighbors told reporters on the scene that they smelled gas, but it’s unclear whether they smelled it before or after the explosion. The cause of the blast has not been determined.

Neighbor Mike Spangler recalled hearing the explosion after taking out the trash.

“Sit down, watch TV and then ‘kaboom,’” he said. “I thought it was a lightning strike on the roof of the house, is what I thought it was. I expected to see my roof on fire,” Spangler said.

The 8,000-square-foot home — now mostly rubble — is in the high-end White Rock Creek Estates development. Every home on the 3700 block of Shantara Lane has either a pool, a tennis court or both.

“They have six or seven people here, they are checking all of the surrounding areas and are not getting any readings or anything,” said Plano Fire-Rescue Capt. Michael Carr at the scene. “The only gas and electric that is shut off at this time is to the house of origin.”

Plano first responders were checking the stability of the residence and set up a perimeter to deal with the debris. The cause of the explosion was still under investigation.

Last July, the Dallas Morning News reported another isolated gas leak a couple miles away on Ohio Drive and West Park Boulevard. Plano police, who had been called to the home two days before the explosion, said that the blast may have been intentional.
