Proposed offshore wind farm plans face opposition in Wainscott, Montauk

A group of homeowners in Wainscott have hired “an army of lawyers, lobbyists, public relations experts and engineers” to keep a proposed offshore wind farm’s transmission cable from being buried under their neighborhood, the New York Times reported. While some initially supported the plan, they changed their minds when they learned the cable could end up in Wainscott, according to the outlet. The developer of the wind farm is now eyeing Montauk for the cable landing site instead, which has led to “resentment” among some residents and the building of opposition there as well. Montauk Chamber of Commerce president Paul Monte told the outlet he hoped “cooler heads will prevail, and they will choose the location that makes the best sense and not base it on who has hired the more powerful lawyers.” [NYT]
