Rep. Kathleen Rice this week asked the federal government to investigate a federally funded housing program administered by the Town of Hempstead, according to Newsday.

In a letter to Housing and Urban Development Inspector General Rae Oliver Davis, Rice said the town’s Department of Urban Renewal had since 2014 built up a reserve of around $1.3 million in Housing Choice Voucher money despite high demand for the subsidies in Hempstead. Around 3,500 households are on a waitlist for subsidies.

The federal government cut Hempstead’s voucher funding in 2018 for building up the reserve and the congresswoman said she was worried that would continue without further scrutiny. [Newsday] — Dennis Lynch
