The town of East Hampton has purchased a 3.1-acre property on Montauk’s Fort Pond for preservation purposes, according to the Independent.

The East Hampton Town Board approved the $2.9 million acquisition of the site, which sits on a peninsula that juts out into the lake. It was home to the Avalon Lakefront Resort, which had 10 motel-style units that were developed in the 1960s. The property had been asking $3.3 million.
