Nassau County homeowners shocked by new tax bills
Owners of newly built or heavily renovated properties are on the hook for their new assessments right away
Some Nassau County homeowners have been taken aback by their tax bills this year, according to Newsday. Nassau County’s recent property value reassessments mean higher bills for many of them.
The county is phasing in tax hikes for most homeowners, but owners of new homes and those with extensive renovations are on the hook for higher valuations immediately because their property has essentially been assessed for the first time.
Sandra Stine, a homeowner in Wantagh, saw her tax bill nearly double to about $31,134 after she renovated her home and expanded it from 1,600 square feet to 3,400 square feet. Stine said she is making up “for everyone else’s exemption.”
Around 80,000 property owners challenged their tax bills last year, eight times the usual number, because of the reassessments.
