New York State’s new law that legalizes recreational marijuana is getting a mixed reception from East End local elected officials, with some concerned about its retail sale implications.

State law allows towns to “opt out” and prohibit cannabis sales in their jurisdictions, and officials in Southampton are split on the issue, according to the Wall Street Journal. Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said that banning sales in town would only deprive it of tax revenue.

Meanwhile, Shinnecock Nation leaders in Southampton plan to open a dispensary on nearby land.
