Sagaponack’s Sagg General Store, built in 1878 and home to Pierre’s market and the village post office, sold  for just under $3.8 million.

The deal closed earlier this month, according to the Southampton Press. The buyers were not identified but listing agent Susan Ratcliffe called them “very community minded.”

The building has stood at 542 Sagaponack Main Street for more than 150 years. The store was built in 1878 and the area that is now the post office was built in the early 1900s.

Thomas Hidreth bought it in 1898, and since then the store has been owned by members of his family and the Thayer family. The most recent owners were Richard and Karen Thayer.

Last fall, Karen Thayer told the Express News Group they would “love to keep it in the family, but we have other directions we want to go in.”

The property was last renovated in 2005, and sold for just $200,000 under asking.

The federal government has a lease for the post office space through 2025, while Pierre’s has a lease expiring in 2028.
