17th century log cabin for sale in New Jersey

Greenwich is the old log cabin in the Western Hemisphere

The Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. But a log cabin for sale in New Jersey is more than a century older than the historic document.

The home at 406 Swedesboro Road in Greenwich, Gloucester County is up for grabs once again, NJ.com reported. The one-acre property is being marketed for only $475,000.

The log cabin is the oldest in the Western Hemisphere still standing in its original position, according to the listing. The 16-by-22 foot structure was built around 1638 by Finnish settlers.

In addition to the cabin, an 1,800-square-foot, two-story Colonial home attached to the original cabin in the 1730s is also part of the listing. So is a 1930s-built machine shop, a four-car garage and a shed.

The owner, Doris Rink, has made an annual habit out of trying to sell the property, reducing the asking price considerably since first listing it in 2015. The home was first offered for $2.9 million in 2015; it’s asking roughly a sixth of that this time.

Rink and her husband, Harry, bought the property from his relatives in 1968. Rink and her husband wed there and lived on the property until Harry died in 2018. They also frequently allowed free tours from the public to roll through.

“I want to get it into the hands of someone who is capable and loving and willing enough to put as much works [sic] into it as my husband and I have over the years,” Rink told the publication of the listing.

In an effort to preserve the property, Rink has reached out far beyond the walls of the log cabin to find a buyer. She said the couple approached colleges in the area, the township and the county about a deal. They even approached the federal government and tried to coax a deal from Sweden and Finland, without luck.
