9/11 stairway may be demolished

The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. wants to demolish the World Trade Center artifact known as the “survivor’s stairway” in order to make way for the future Tower 2 on the site. The staircase is the only above-ground artifact of the trade center still standing. The LMDC is proposing to keep a portion of the stairway where it is now but to either destroy or move the rest of the structure, which was used as an escape route during 9/11. A public-review period for the proposal will run until Feb. 12. more [NYT]
