Although the nine-years-in- the-making BAM Cultural District in Downtown Brooklyn was recently dealt a blow when plans for an Enrique Norton-designed library were nixed, other buildings and features slated for the arts district are still in the works. The Theatre for a New Audience is set to be designed by Frank Gehry and Hugh Hardy; contemporary dance company Danspace is supposed to anchor a mixed-use building HPD will help finance; and a park that serves as the entryway for three cultural institutions is being planned. According to Downtown Brooklyn Partnership president Joe Chan, the proposed district has taken a long time to come to fruition because “coordinating development with cultural groups is a lot more complicated than private developers.” more [Brownstoner]
