At a public meeting today the Landmarks Preservation Commission introduced a proposal to designate three buildings in Williamsburg’s Domino Sugar Refinery complex historical landmarks. The landmarking is being discussed as a partnership between the nonprofit Community Preservation Corporation (CPC) and developer Isaac Katan prepare to construct more than 1,500 residential units in the massive, multi-building structure on the Brooklyn waterfront. If the landmarking goes through, the development team will not be able to tear the three buildings down in order to construct its proposed development. The vast majority of community groups represented at the meeting said they supported the landmarking but want to ensure that CPC builds a significant amount of affordable housing on the site. more By James B.
