A notorious commenter on the Brooklyn real estate blog Brownstoner,
called The What, has reached cyber-celebrity status. New York Magazine
examines The What’s highly opinionated and often profane comments about
Brooklyn’s gentrification battles, trying to figure out who The What is
and what effect the writer’s comments have had on the site. Other
commenters have variously applauded The What’s honesty and called for a
permanent ban from the site. Some have even accused Brownstoner founder
Jonathan Butler of creating The What to increase traffic.
