A construction crane has collapsed on the Upper East Side, crashing
into another building at East 91st Street and First Avenue. Two people,
including the crane operator, have reportedly been killed. The top part of the crane broke off, authorities said. The building under construction was the Azure, a 34-story tower at 333 East 91st Street. The crane crashed into an apartment building at 1749 First Avenue. The incident follows the March 15 crane collapse in Turtle Bay which killed seven people, damaged several buildings and hastened the eventual resignation of Buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster. On Wednesday, the DOB announced that it was ending an interim requirement that an inspector must be present before during an extension of a crane. It also announced an interim rule mandating training of crane assembly crews.
